Goals of EuroGames

Once a year the EGLSF celebrates a huge European gay sport event: EuroGames, the European Gay & Lesbian Championships. There are two levels of EuroGames: large-scale EuroGames which are usually held every 4 years and small-scale EuroGames which are held annually (except for years in which Gay Games or Outgames take place).

For the large scale EuroGames no limitations apply. Small-scale EuroGames are limited to a maximum of 3,000 participants in order to enable small clubs to bid for, and host, the EuroGames.

Besides offering a high-quality sport event to the gay and lesbian sports community, the EGLSF wishes to promote the following goals:

  • fight against discrimination in sport on grounds of sexual preference
  • stimulate integration in sport and emancipation of lesbians and gays
  • enable and support the coming out of gay and lesbian sports men and women
  • support the founding of new gay, lesbian, straight and mixed groups
  • No Discrimination

The EuroGames are open to everyone who wishes to participate, regardless of gender, age, race, sexual prefence etc. It is an open event, while still being mindful of the feasabilty of organising sports for certain groups and the organisational capacity of the host (organising committee).

    Participants

In past EuroGames, participants from all areas of Europe, and even outside Europe, participated in this unique event. However, to ensure that as many Europeans as possible can take part in this event, participants from outside Europe are put on a waiting list until registatration has closed. These people can join the competitions that are not yet full.

    Who

Every year, the EGLSF calls for candidates to host the EuroGames two years later (to allow sufficient time to organise the event). A candidate should be member of the European Federation for some time and have experience with organising of sport events. At the Annual General Assembly (March), the decision is taken by the membership of the EGLSF which candidate will be the host to the EuroGames.

    Hymn – We are Leaving

The organisers of the 1996 Berlin EuroGames were so kind to present the European Gay & Lesbian Sport Federation with an official hymn (anthem) for the EuroGames.

This hymn is called 'We are leaving (Oveture)' and performed by the Swedish group Polaris.

    Bidding For EuroGames

The bidding procedure starts early. Already 3-4 years before the planned EuroGames should a member club think of its abilities and possibilities for realising such an event. The EGLSF board than evolves plans together with this club. As a continuing support, the bidding club receives a handbook with all procedures and deadlines. At the latest on November 1st 3 years prior to the games the board must receive the written application for the bid. On the following Annual General Assembly (AGA) the EGLSF members vote on that bid, which leaves 2 years for the executing club to realise its plans.

If you are interested in bidding, or would need more information, please do not hesitate to Contact us immediately.

    Transgender Policy

At the moment, the EGLSF is in the process of designing a Transgender Policy to serve as guideline for sports events of its membership, especially for EuroGames. It should be completed shortly after this year's AGA.

While looking at the background of this topic, it appeared that the cosmos of Gender Theory could play a vital role in the development of our Outreach policy and activities.
