Statistically, every day someone dies of AIDS -- and this, for more than ten years. This statistic says nothing of the conditions under which our friends and relatives die.

A large majority of these people have not had the chance to spend their last days in the familiar surroundings of their own homes. They have not had the chance to spend this final time with their circle of friends or relatives. It is all too easy to send AIDS patients to hospital.

Although the Berlin Home Care Project has improved this situation, medical care at home is not the only answer. Too many cannot be cared for at home and too many do not have the functioning social environment necessary to supplement home care.

Berlin needs a facility which tries to offer AIDS patients the best possible replacement for the home; a facility which, instead of excluding, will integrate. This does not mean to integrate the patient into society so much as to integrate the process of dying into the consciousness of society.

This is what Lighthouse wants. This is why Berlin needs a lighthouse.

Speech by Lighthouse coordinator, Rodya Troyke, at the big spender gala 1995.
